    Leaders and Followers

I continue to get amazing inspiration from both the CTI list-serv and the participants from the Intl Ledership Assn!  The latest discussion I have been following and participating in is one about whether we need followers in order to avoid chaos?

As you probably know, we at the Deeper Leadership Institute maintain that we are all leaders.  So, that premise begets the question:  can one be both a leader and a follower?  And/or is it necessary to have followers?  And/or can we all be leaders and be co-leaders?  If the last scenario is plausible, I can see the case made for chaos; but if we are all co-leading around an established stake, then do we need followers or can we all co-lead?

    Let's hear from you!

    Leadership, Privelege and Diversity

    Hi all:

I am still here in Prague at the International Leadership Association conference and today we had quite an exciting roundtable discussion about leadership, privilege and diversity.  We have always maintained that learning about one's own privilege was a key element of personal leadership as well as diversity and that in fact, personal leadership is a key element of diversity training!

It appears that the confluence of leadership and diversity is a topic that has not received a lot of attention and yet what we are hearing at this conference is that what was heard during the presidential electoral process, was so blatantly racist that our attention must return (if it ever left) this topic.

What are your thoughts on this matter?  Is there a place for the discussion of diversity and/or privilege when discussing leadership?

    Personal Leadership Challenge

We are collaborating with TED recipient, Karen Armstrong and challenging you all to a moment of silence this Friday at 11:00 EST to think about ways to bring more compassion into our personal and professional lives.  We would be interested to hear what you come up with!  Please feel free to post what comes to you!

If you would like more information about the Charter of Compassion, please google TED and then search for the Charter for Compassion.

    International Leadership Conference

I am writing from Prague while presenting at the International Leadership Conference.  What an experience!  These conferences are always inspirational and this one on transformational leadership is no exception!  What an honor to be in the presence of academicians, researchers, and practitioners of leadership.  Today our opening address was given by the former President of Czechoslovakia who came into leadership after the Velvet Revolution.  Personally, I did not know much about the Velvet Revolution but as exemplified by its name, it was a bloodless revolution.  Couple this event with the "fall" of the Berlin wall and Apartheid, and it is chilling to think that these events occurred within the last 20 years! Many of these leaders did not aspire to the positions they achieved in government although they did aspire to achieve their vision in one way or another.

So, I ask, as a leader, what will your legacy be????  What is your vision?  How will you achieve it?
